Nats Get Swept in Los Angeles

by @ 1:16 pm. Filed under 2008 Nationals

The Washington Nationals took a couple of games right on the chin in Los Angeles.  They lost both games as they got shut out in both of them.  They obviously really struggled to get much of anything going off of the Dodger pitching staff.  They lost on Saturday 6-0 and on Sunday 2-0.  They are now 38-67 this season.

On Saturday, Odalis Perez started for Washington and gave up six runs in four innings as he saw his record drop to 3-8.  The bullpen gave up only two hits and no runs over the last four innings to help keep the Dodgers from doing any more damage at the plate.  The offense managed only two hits all game, a single from Willie Harris and a double from Ronnie Belliard.

On Sunday Jason Bergmann started for Washington and pitched very well.  Bergmann lasted six innings and gave up only two runs.  He struck out five and walked three as his record fell to 1-8.  The Nationals got five hits on Sunday but were still unable to get on the scoreboard.  Wil Nieves led the way with two hits including a double.  They just never threatened to score.

Washington is taking the day off on Monday and will get back on it on Tuesday against the Phillies.  Collin Balester is scheduled to start for the Nationals.  Game time is 7:10pm.

Nats Lose a Close One

by @ 6:18 am. Filed under 2008 Nationals

The Washington Nationals had a lead late Friday night against the Los Angeles Dodgers but just couldn’t hold their slim lead.  The Nationals fell to the Dodgers 3-2.  Their record also fell as it is now 38-65.

John Lannan started on the hill for the Nationals and was terrific as usual.  Lannan went seven innings and gave up three earned runs.  He allowed only six hits but saw his record fall to 6-10 any way. Lannan has pitcher very well this season but has been the victim of poor run support.

Willie Harris got the Nationals on the board in the third with a sacrifice fly.  They held the lead until sixth inning.  When the Nats came up in the 8th inning they were down 3-1.  They got an RBI single from Ryan Zimmerman to bring the game to 3-2.  Austin Kearns had two hits for Washington.

The Nats and Dodgers will play again on Saturday night.  Odalis Perez will start for Washington.  Game time is 10:10pm.

Nats Lose Twice in San Francisco

by @ 4:45 pm. Filed under 2008 Nationals

The Washington Nationals had a lead in San Francisco but lost it in the bottom of the eighth inning along with the game.  They got some decent starting pitching but they ended up losing the game 6-4.  They are now 38-63 this season.

Collin Balester started for Washington but couldn’t last any longer than five innings.  In his five innings of work he gave up three earned runs.   Balester also walked two and struck out two.  Luis Ayala came on in the 8th with a 4-3 lead.  When he left his club was down 6-4.  Ayala is now 1-6 on the season with an ERA of 5.77.

Ryan Zimmerman helped carry the offense as he mashed out three hits, all singles.  Willie Harris, Paul LoDuca, and Ryan Langerhans all had two hits for the Nationals and Langerhans had a double.  Catcher Jesus Flores hit a solo home run, his sixth of the season.  Once again the Nationals failed to cash in on many chances as they left 11 men on base.

On Thursday afternoon the Nationals were completely shut down by Matt Cain of the Giants as they lost 1-0.  Cain threw a complete game shut out and gave up only four hits.  Tim Redding started for the Nats and was almost as good.  Redding last eight innings and gave up one run while striking out five.  Redding is now 7-5 this season.   Ryan Zimmerman and Cristian Guzman each doubled but the Nationals just didn’t have many scoring chances against Cain.

The Nationals will stay out west and start a series with the Dodgers on Friday.  John Lannan is scheduled to start the opener.  Game time is 10:40pm.

Nationals Lose in San Francisco

by @ 2:53 pm. Filed under 2008 Nationals

The Washington Nationals lost on Tuesday night in San Francisco.  The Giants put three on the board in the first inning the Nats just couldn’t make up the difference.  The 6-3 loss drops the Nationals to 38-62 on the season.

Jason Bergmann started for the Nationals and saw his record drop to 1-7 on the season.  Bergmann lasted five innings and gave up five runs (four of the earned).  He didn’t walk a single batter and struck out one.  The bullpen went the final three innings and gave up one earned run.  They did help keep the game within reach.

Willie Harris and Paul LoDuca led the Nationals with two hits each.  LoDuca had an RBI double and Harris added a solo home run to help get the Nationals on the board.  Ryan Zimmerman and Ronnie Belliard each collected a couple of walks.  The Nats had plenty of chances to put more runs on the board than they did leave 10 men on base to end innings.

The Nationals and Giants will play again on Wednesday night.  Collin Balester is set to start the game for the Nationals.  Game time is 10:15pm.

Nationals Go Off Against Atlanta

by @ 2:47 pm. Filed under 2008 Nationals

The Washington Nationals continued to swing hot bats after the All Star break.  The Nationals beat the Atlanta Braves on Sunday by a score of 15-6.  The fifteen runs scored by the Nationals is a season high for the organization.  The win brings the Nationals to 38-61 this season.

Odalis Perez started on the mound for the Nationals and got enough run support to pick up the win.  Perez went five innings and gave up five runs on nine hits.  Not his best start of the year but good enough to up his record to 3-7.  The Nationals bullpen went the final four innings and gave up only one run the rest of the way to lock up the win.

Willie Harris was a one man wrecking crew against his former team.  Harris went 2-3 with three walks and drove in five runs.  Austin Kearns went 3-5 and scored five times.  Catcher Jesus Flores went 5-6 as the Nationals just crushed the Atlanta pitching staff.  Kearns and Harris each homered as the Nationals collected 17 hits.  Seven different players had hits for the Nationals.

The Nationals will take Monday off as they head out west to start a series with the San Francisco Giants.  Jason Bergmann is scheduled to start the opener on Tuesday.  Game time is 10:15pm.

Washington Tops Atlanta 8-2

by @ 9:08 am. Filed under 2008 Nationals

The Washington Nationals got another strong start out of John Lannan.  The offense kicked it up a notch and helped the Nationals get a win against their division rivals, the Atlanta Braves.  The 8-2 win moves the Nationals to 37-61.

John Lannan started and was fantastic once again for Washington.  Lannan got the win to move to 6-9 on the season.  Even though he has nine losses, his ERA is a very respectable 3.29.  Lannan went six innings and gave up only one run.  He struck out four batters while walking three.

Willie Harris led the offensive attack with three hits.  Ryan Langerhans, Paul LoDuca, Cristian Guzman, and Austin Kearns all added two hits as the Nationals pounded out 14 hits as a team.  Guzman led the club with three RBI.  Both of Langerhans’ hits were doubles.

The Nationals and Braves will finish their series on Sunday afternoon in Atlanta.  Odalis Perez is scheduled to start for Washington.  Game time is 1:30pm.

Nats Fall in Atlanta

by @ 2:13 pm. Filed under 2008 Nationals

The Washington Nationals opened up the second half of the season with a loss in Atlanta to the Braves.  The Nats offense was surprising effective, but they couldn’t keep the Braves off the scoreboard.  The Nationals 7-6 loss leaves them at 36-61 this season.

Tim Redding, the subject of many trade rumors, started for the Nationals and got hit around pretty hard.  Redding went only four inning and gave up six hits and six earned runs.  He also walked three and struck out three.  His record is now 7-4 this season, a surprisingly good record on such a bad team.

Willie Harris and Ryan Langerhans led the Nationals with two hits each.  Harris had a single and double while Langerhans had a single and a triple.  Paul LoDuca led the offense with two RBI.  Johnny Estrada hit fifth but went 0-4.  Lo Duca was only 1-5 and left four men on base.

by @ 5:48 am. Filed under 2008 Nationals

Tim Redding got the start for the Nationals on Friday and led the pitching staff to the shut out.  Redding went 6 innings and gave up seven hits while striking out six batters.  Redding is now 7-3 this season.  Cristian Guzman and Ronnie Belliard each had three hits to lead the Washington offense.  Guzman scored three runs while Belliard drove in five runs as he hit two home runs.  Willie Harris, Austin Kearns, and Jesus Flores each had two hits for Washington.

On Saturday things didn’t go quite as well for the Nats.  Collin Balester started for the Nationals and couldn’t get out of the fifth inning.  Balester went 4.2 innings and gave up six runs, four of them earned.  He struck out three while allowing eleven hits.  The bullpen did add 4.1 innings of shut out baseball to keep things close.  Willie Harris led the Nats with two hits, one of which was a home run.  Paul Lo Duca and Ronnie Belliard also had two hits each for Washington.

The Nationals will wrap up their series with the Astros on Sunday afternoon.  Odalis Perez will start for the Nationals.  Game time is 1:35pm.

Nationals Fall at Home

by @ 12:31 pm. Filed under 2008 Nationals

The Washington Nationals kept rallying and rallying on Thursday night, but could not come away with a win.  The Nats lost 7-5 in 11 innings to the Arizona Diamondbacks.  The Nationals are now 35-58.

Jason Bergmann started for Washington and was actually very sharp.  He went seven innings and gave up only two earned runs.  He also struck out three batters and walked only one.  He wound up with a no-decision.  The loss went to Luis Ayala who two runs in the top of the 11th inning as he lost his fifth game of the season.

The Nationals got three hits from Cristian Guzman, who will represent the team in the All Star Game.  Austin Kearns hit a two run double in the bottom of the 10th inning to help the Nats force an 11th inning.  Kearns had three RBI on the night.  The Nationals really struggled all night to get anything going offensively.  They managed only 8 hits all night in 43 at bats.  They scored an unearned run.

The Nationals will not start a three game series at home against the Houston Astros.  Tim Redding is scheduled to start on Friday night.  Game time is 7:35pm.

Nats Split a Pair with Arizona

by @ 2:03 pm. Filed under 2008 Nationals

The Washington Nationals got back in the win column with win on Wednesday after a loss on Tuesday.  Washington fell on Tuesday 2-0 but won an impressive game on Wednesday, 5-0 over the Diamondbacks.  The Nationals are now 35-57 this season.

On Tuesday the Nationals got a short start out of Odalis Perez who was ejected in the third inning for arguing over a balk.  Perez, Shell, Rivera, and Hanrahan each went between 2 and 2.2 innings and gave up no earned runs.  Perez and Rivera each gave up an unearned run.  The Nats obviously didn’t get much going on offense as they put together only six hits.  Austin Kearns and Dmitri Young each had two hits for Washington.

On Wednesday, John Lannan got the start for the Nats and continued to pitch very well to pick up the win.  Lannan threw six innings and gave up only two hits while shutting out the D’Backs.  Four relievers threw the final three innings to finish off the shut out.  The big blow on offense came from Jesus Flores who hit a three run homer in the sixth inning to put some distance between the two teams.

Arizona and the Nationals will finish their three game series on Thursday night.  Jason Bergmann is set to start for the Nationals.  Game time is 7:10pm.
