Todd Boss,
Thank you for the feedback, I appreciate it greatly. I absolutely agree with the fact Washington did the right thing in not signing Soriano to a 100 million dollar contract. As we have seen Soriano's skills have started to go on the decline the past couple of years in Chicago. I was getting across that Washington wouldn't offer Soriano the kind of deal worth while after that career year. And hopefully Jordan Zimmerman does come back strong after Tommy John surgery and helps rebuild the Nationals. I changed the line-up thing, in which it says Soriano played shortstop his rookie year. And you are right, that I must take into consideration with Jeff Loria buying the Marlins. And I am not trying to put it all on Rizzo. My advice to him is to make sure he does his homework and have his scouts do their job and find the right talent before he pulls the trigger on any deal. And great point made on the Colon trade, I will add that to the story.

Thank you again for the feedback.

Problems I have your article:
- You don't actually portray the Colon trade in the correct light. Minaya made the trade basically because he was operating on the presumption that the Expos were going to be contracted. It wasn't made to make a pennant run (the Expos were too far out of 1st at the time).
- Soriano played 2nd for the Yankees. He hadn't played shortstop since his rookie year.
- NOT Signing Soriano is probably the best move that Bowden ever made. His contract is generally considered one of the worst in baseball right now. The guys we picked up as supplemental draft picks (Jordan Zimmerman and Josh Smoker) were good compensation and (saving Zimmermann's injury) will play a part in our rebuilding.
- Its difficult to really hold the team accountable for Bay and Vazquez deals; neither player really blossomed until last year and we traded them away 5-6 years ago.
- The scouting department of the Expos/nationals from 2003-2007 is a FAR cry from where it is today. You have to take into consideration what happened when Loria bought the Marlins and gutted the staff. Its no secret that the Expos used to be leaders in player development and scouting and now the Marlins are. Rizzo was hired in 2006 and his first impactful draft was in 2007; anything that happened prior to that is not something you can place at the feet of the current regime.

That being said, yeah we've all played the what if game with Sizemore, Lee and Phillips. It is a shame considering how well those guys have turned out.

Hi!

I’m Kristin, a University of Pennsylvania psychology student and a huge baseball fan. I am currently conducting an honors thesis study on clutch ability and psychological characteristics of Major league baseball players. I made a survey asking fans to rate players from various teams on certain characteristics. One of these teams is the Nationals and it would be great to have some Nationals fans fill out my survey and rate their favorite players. Here is some background info:

What is “clutch”? What players are considered “clutch” performers? What players are “gritty” or have natural talent? Are these players also “clutch”? These frequently cited terms in the game of baseball have rarely been objectively studied. I have created a survey asking about some Major League players’ characteristics and it would be great if some of you, being huge baseball fans, could fill it out! It should only take a maximum of 10 minutes. Also, I would love to hear any comments that you have about my survey! Thanks so much for all your help!

Here is the website for my survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=VUWValhJzb65tk1lZoMMEQ_3d_3d

It's nice to see some optimism about the Nats in the MSM for once. I'm looking forward to the season and also think that the team has a shot at having a halfway decent year. A lot of ifs have to come together, but I don't think last place is an automatic like most people do.

Hi, Greg. Just learned of your blog yesterday. Good stuff.

That's one wildly optimistic preview by the NBC Sports guy. Third isn't out of the question, better if things break right? Wow.
