In a match up of two of the worst teams in baseball, the Washington Nationals beat the Seattle Mariners on Friday night. The Nationals scored all seven of their runs in the first two innings on their way to a 7-6 win. The Nationals are now 27-42, the Mariners are 24-43.
Shawn Hill started for the Nationals and got hit around pretty hard but was still able to pick up his first win of the season. He lasted five innings but gave up 12 hits and a walk while allowing five runs. Three relievers went the final four innings. Jon Rauch threw a scoreless ninth to pick up his 14th save of the season.
The Nats scored a run in the first on a Dmitri Young single and then racked up six runs in the second inning to help put the game out of reach. Lastings Milledge and Jesus Flores led the Nationals with two hits each. Young, Flores, and Ronnie Belliard each had two RBI. However, over the final 7.1 innings the Nationals were unable to score any runs as they had only two hits the rest of the game.
Game two of the series will happen Saturday night as Tyler Clippard starts for Washington. Game time is 10:10pm.
